Interviews & Assessments process
An invite will be emailed to each party inviting them to attend the Clinic. A general schedule of the assessment is provided to help parties prepare for the assessment. It is expected children of all ages named on the order attend the appointment.
Generally, the assessment is a full-day event, commencing at 9am and concluding at 5pm. As it is a long day, parents and caregivers are expected to have food and children’s favourite toys with them.
Children aged 14 years and below have an adult caregiver known to them to care for them when their parent is interviewed. The Clinic space is limited, and the Expert will provide you time to step outside and have a break where possible.
The Expert will arrange an online follow-up assessment with the adult/parents the following week of the assessment at no additional cost. This provides the Expert the opportunity to ask further questions after meeting with all relevant family members. It will also provide interviewees the opportunity to ask questions.
Preparing children
Family court proceedings are an adult issue and not one for children to consider. Please let children know they are going to meet and speak with someone who is going to ask questions to understand who they are and how they are. The interviews and the Report are not to be discussed with children either before interviews, or after the release of the Report. Please do not question children about what they said during the interviews.
Duty of the Expert to the Court
Parties are reminded that the Expert is providing a psychological forensic report to the Court as part of family law proceedings. There is no privacy or confidentiality offered to any adult or child, and all information gathered will be used to form the Expert’s opinion of the current functioning of the family.
Parties cannot provide additional material to the Expert during the assessment. Should the Expert require additional information, they will contact both legal representatives and make a formal request.
Invoice and payment
Full payment is required to secure the Expert’s assessment date. This payment is expected at least three weeks prior to date of assessment. Invoices can be issued according to the joint instructions to each client care of their legal representatives or directly to self-represented parties.
Please note, excess fees may apply if:
There are more than four interviewees;
There is material provided above the limit stipulated;
There is material provided after the assessment.
Cross examination fees
Legal representatives contact the Expert’s administration team to reserve a date and session time for cross examination. A session time is either morning (10am – 1pm) or afternoon (2pm – 5pm). Each session is invoiced as a three-hour block, even if only part of the time is utilised. A full day’s reservation is both the morning and afternoon sessions of at least six hours.
The reservation of the Expert’s time is confirmed with full payment of the initial invoice. As the Expert sets aside the day for cross examination, there is no refund offered if cross examination is cancelled.
Material
Legal representatives or self-represented parties settle on a jointly agreed and prepared consolidated index of material, noting the material volume limits for each report. Only e-material provided via eBrief Ready is accepted. If material is not provided in a timely manner, the Expert cannot prepare adequately for the assessment.
